The Philippines is a land apart from mainland Southeast Asia – not only geographically but also spiritually and culturally. The country’s overwhelming Catholicism, the result of 350 years of Spanish rule, is its most obvious enigma. Vestiges of the Spanish era include exuberant town fiestas (festivals), unique Spanish-Filipino colonial architecture, and exquisite, centuries-old stone churches lording over bustling town plazas.
The island group consists of more than 7000 islands, and at certain times of the year it will feel like you have them all to yourself. The typical island boasts a jungle-clad, mountainous interior and a sandy coastline flanked by aquamarine waters and the requisite coral reef. Three largest islands are Luzon, Mindanao and Visayas.
The colors of "the Philippines flag" are white, which represents peace and purity, red, which represents courage and bravery and blue - for noble ideals. The sun in the flag represents the beginning of a new era of self determination, while the 3 stars stand for the 3 principal geographic areas of the country: Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. Depicted in the coat of arms, the sun symbolizes the independence, the lion - Spanish occupation and the eagle - American occupation.
Beaches, volcanoes and wildlife are among the attractions that tempt tourists to the country and the most visited places include the urban sprawl of Manila, islands with exotic beaches and sites of outstanding natural beauty. The capital city of Manila is the point of arrival for many visitors to the islands and has many attractions. Watch beautiful Manila attractions on 'Philippines Live Wallpaper'.
